Flashing is a separate piece of 2" by 3" aluminum that goes under the shingles and comes down over the back side of the gutter. The flashing insures there is no way water can get behind the gutter. We use fascia hangers or "hidden hangers" that are screwed in (not nailed) every 2' or less, never 3' or 4'. We use strip miters instead of box corners to insure they will stay leak free
